AbstractService Learning (SL) is a pedagogy aimed at combining academic studies and volunteer community action. The advantages of SL are numerous and are discussed elsewhere. The article points to some of the less studied aspects of service learning programs: the price that students pay for their volunteer service in the community. The discussion will be based on experiences of students in a Community Interpreting course in an Israeli University, where bilingual students volunteer as interpreters in public institutions and NGOs. In their reflective reports from 2008-2011, the students reveal problems encountered in marketing their cultural capital, facing bureaucracy, coping with difficult emotional situations and cultural differences, and handling ethical dilemmas. The study will conclude with possible explanations for these negative effects, and offer suggestions of ways for the organizers of the volunteer work--be they faculty, volunteer coordinators or NGOs, to help volunteers give more and pay less. (As Provided).
