AbstractIn this commentary, various expert authors offer their ideas on indigenous research in the philosophy of education and PESA's role from an indigenous perspective. Georgiana Stewart is the first author to step forward and explain that education is based on knowledge, and so education is centrally concerned with literacy and identity. Stewart goes on to warn that indigenous education however must be based on sound understanding of indigenous philosophies, and how these differ from and intersect with Western knowledge frameworks. This reasoning highlights the importance of the philosophy of education to indigenous people, and hence the rationale behind PESA establishing the Indigenous Philosophy Group (IPG). Stewart writes that within the vast forest of thought, being an indigenous philosophical researcher can sometimes be lonely, but membership in PESA can help in that walk because non-indigenous colleagues are also wandering there. She suggests then that PESA membership and IPG could be both a sanity net and an oasis of collegiality. Discussing the idiosyncrasies of individual research projects allows non-indigenous members a glimpse into the unique roads that each researcher is traveling and allows members to hone and expand their skills. Other points of view are provided from Hawaiian, Australian, and Samoan experts. (As Provided).
