Abstract | The literature on human motivation and persistence posits that to be stewards of environments that both challenge and support students requires more than cultivating grit. In this article, the author explores why a truly developmental educational experience must transcend the fostering of individuals' grit and resilience. At its best, it must lead to the making of personal and social meaning that grows into moral wisdom. There is far greater value in an education that engenders not only grit and resilience but moral meaning and moral wisdom. The discovery of moral meaning and wisdom results in education that leads to greater social awareness, greater social integration, and greater social cohesion. (ERIC). |
