Abstract | In their classrooms, the authors observed students experiencing meaningful and memorable learning when they were immersed in scientific inquiry involving Bess beetles. Students who learn from active, experiential instruction, find such learning to be exciting and emotionally engaging. As a result, they learn more deeply and effectively. This article describes an experiential interdisciplinary unit focusing on Bess beetles, which aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards. The activity engaged fourth- and fifth-grade students in: (1) Bess beetle research; (2) biological and physical scientific inquiry; (3) lab report and creative writing; (4) statistical data (range, mean, median, and mode) analysis; (5) figuring human strength proportional to beetle strength; and (6) labeled scientific drawings.
