AbstractThe nineteenth century educational experiment by Amos Bronson Alcott and Elizabeth Palmer Peabody at the Temple School in Boston from 1834-1836 was generally considered a failure. Nevertheless, a narrow window of the experiment planted the seed for future interest in early childhood education by means of Peabody's (1836) "Record of a School: Exemplifying the General Principles of Spiritual Culture." The purpose of this paper is to explore the influences and development of the educational experiment made by Alcott and Peabody at the Temple School, resulting in the publication of the "Record." This paper explores the European influences on Alcott and Peabody, the background experiences that brought Alcott and Peabody together, and the documentation of instruction in the "Record," in terms of student comportment, reading, and writing. Not only Alcott's unique theory, but also Peabody's documentation of classroom teaching provided information for improved pedagogical practice. The power of the "Record" also provided information to the larger American community as an aid in understanding why a change in teaching children was imminent. Hence, the "Record" became the bellwether of future early childhood curriculum. (ERIC).
