AbstractThe Family and Consumer Sciences Body of Knowledge (FCS-BOK) provides an ideological stance that is universal to all practitioners of the profession, and it has major implications for the normative ethics that guide professional practice. The purpose of this article is to outline a conceptual framework to reveal the relational ethic inherent in the FCS-BOK. The boundary-defining assumptions of a relational ethic identified by Robinson (2011) and their fit with the FCS-BOK are investigated in relation to attentiveness in the core concepts; relational ontology from the vantage point of families as ecosystems; multiple contexts in Life Course Development Theory; and permeable boundaries in Systems Theory. Pragmatic implications of an identified ethic include more intentional ethical perspective taking in moral deliberation, awareness of criticisms of a relational ethic, and opportunities to assess the current model of the FCS-BOK for its authenticity to the moral intent of professional practice.
