Abstract | Experts have noted a great deal of variability among U.S. higher education institutions' planning and preparedness for emergency situations. However, resources are available to help campus leaders effectively mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from a multitude of disaster scenarios. One way for emergency managers and campus leaders to engage in a productive conversation about campus risk is to conduct a hazard vulnerability analysis (HVA) using a hazard assessment tool. This paper presents a discussion of the results of a national survey regarding the frequency and use of HVA assessments in higher education as well as a call to action for institutions to develop more intentional and systematic relationships at the state, regional, and national levels.
