Abstract | Feedback given by coaches can have a profound effect on athletes' performance, as well as on their perception of the motivational climate. The Coaching Behaviors Assessment System classifies the feedback that coaches give during practices or games into 12 behavioral categories, which will be described in this article. Real-life scenarios will be used as examples of how different types of feedback could be used with athletes. The type of feedback given can help create two motivational climates: task-involving and ego-involving. An ego-involving motivational climate is created when a coach rewards performance outcomes only, and is associated with athletes feeling more anxious and less related to their peers and their coach. A task-involving motivational climate is created when a coach rewards effort and improvement, and has been shown to lead to team cohesion, increased performance, and autonomy. By addressing the different types of feedback and their effects on the motivational climate, the coach-athlete relationship could potentially be strengthened, and performance could be increased.
