AbstractSouth African universities have arguably performed well in many areas since the advent of democracy in 1994. Discernible measurements can be gleaned from: curriculum changes, research outputs and student admission policies. However, these universities have not performed to their optimal level due to a confluence of factors. The purpose of this study was to assess the performance of South African universities using selected performance indicators to establish the extent to which they have become reputable institutions by international standards. The assessment areas were: infrastructure, research outputs, the remuneration of Vice-Chancellors, curriculum changes and staff/ student profiles. Data was collected using direct observation and desktop research. The findings showed that the performance of these universities reflected their varied historical conditions. One conclusion is that it would be erroneous to judge them in the same light. The recommendation is that the distribution of financial resources should reflect this heterogeneity. (As Provided).
