Abstract | In this article, Derek Hurrell, points out that while it's easy to fall into the impression that the proficiency strand "Fluency" is all about knowing basic number facts in all its many and splendid ways. He add it is easy to overlook, that within Fluency there are requirements that are based in Algebra; Measurement and Geometry; and Statistics and Probability. However, the one that Hurrell thinks can really get lost and ignored is "estimation." Although computational estimation is probably the most practised of all estimation, it has been Hurrell's experience that perhaps even this is not exercised enough. Providing students with opportunities to estimate in a nonthreatening environment may assist in making them more inclined to use estimation strategies. In the article, Hurrell provides some activities which students will find engaging. (ERIC). |
