AbstractSerious curricular reform is both exhilarating in its possibilities and exhausting in its particulars. When its scope is significant and it is undertaken in response to a variety of difficult challenges, curriculum revision becomes more about cultural change than a mere matter of logistics. While studying adaptive leadership with colleagues at the Whidbey Institute Powers of Leadership retreat, author Kathy Wolfe reflects on the change process she experienced when faculty, staff, and students at Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU) redesigned their general education program over a period of three years (2010-2013). She points toward the adaptive leadership framework developed by Ronald Heifetz, Alexander Grashow, and Marty Linsky for inspiration, and a valuable strategy for curricular change. Wolfe muses that although adaptive change involves some losses, relies on diversity for success, and takes time, eventually, it should improve an organization's capacity to thrive. A list of resources is included. (ERIC).
