AbstractIn this study, I explored the motivation of middle school students participating in online literature circles facilitated by college students, compared to traditional face-to-face literature circles they previously utilized. Sixty-eight rural, middle school students from two English teachers' classrooms took part in two sets of online literature circles. Each literature circle focused on one book and lasted for four weeks. The 18 college students were pre-service teachers taking a semester-long course on the teaching of literacy to middle school students. Data from surveys, interviews, and online discussion posts reveal middle school students can be motivated to learn in meaningful ways from online literature circles involvement. Literature circles implementation in middle school classrooms is continually evolving as teachers respond to the challenges they face teaching today's students. Qualitative analysis suggests incorporating online literature circles can be a helpful way to motivate middle school students to read for enjoyment, to better comprehend and to discuss books at deeper levels.
