AbstractThe rising prevalence of obesity in society has resulted in an increased need for physical education teachers to create learning opportunities that promote physical activity among children. However, the presence of anti-fat attitudes and a limited understanding of the challenges associated with being overweight in a physical activity environment may inhibit elementary physical education teachers' ability to effectively work with students who are overweight or obese. By having a greater awareness of anti-fat attitudes and their potential effect on the success of overweight students, as well as by gaining practical teaching strategies, teachers may be able to increase the success and enjoyment of students who are overweight or obese in physical education settings. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of anti-fat attitudes, as well as to discuss the challenges of being overweight in a physical activity environment. It also provides practical recommendations for modifying and adapting the elementary physical education experience in order to offer a more supportive environment for students who are overweight or obese.
