AbstractThe purpose of Russell and Limle's (2013) study was to determine whether youth-sport specialization and retrospective recall of youth-sport experiences were related to participants' perceptions of and participation in sport and physical activity as young adults. A significant number of participants (76 percent) reported specializing in five major team sports, including basketball, soccer, football, softball, and baseball. Results comparing participants' specialization classification with their physical activity enjoyment were not significant. Also, comparisons of current exercise frequency based on youth-sport specialization were not significant. However, the relationship between sport specialization as young athletes and current sport participation as young adults was significant. This indicates that those who participated in a single sport as young athletes were less likely to participate in sports as young adults when compared to those who participated in multiple sports as a young athlete.
