| Abstract | This article examines the Multiple Grammars (MG) theory proposed by Luiz Amaral and Tom Roeper in the present issue and presents a critique of the research that went into the theory. Topics discussed include the allegation that the bilinguals and second language learners in the original article are primarily students in an academic setting, Amaral and Roeper's use of the term modern linguistic theory, and the role of linguistics in the area of second language learning. The author's critique addresses five questions: (1) Where are the learners? (2) What are the relevant facts? (3) What is the role of representations (4) What is modern linguistic theory? and (5) Where is linguistics? The author concludes by stating that linguistics is rapidly losing ground in the area of second language teaching, and in the human sciences as a whole. Second language research provides a unique opportunity for linguists to regain some ground, but only if linguists are willing to get their hands dirty. (ERIC). |
