Abstract"Meaning" fascinates Marissa Silverman. Partly because the question "What is the meaning of "meaning"?" is not only conceptually challenging, but also because a reasonable answer would be enormously helpful to her in the pursuit of "a good" personal and professional life. So, in probing "meaning," she is not only engaging in philosophical reflection for the enjoyment of the process itself, but for pragmatic reasons. She believes a conceptual examination of meaning and meaningfulness has the potential to deepen her personal and professional understanding of herself and others, as well as providing insights into why people find music so personally and socially meaningful, and how the processes of educating people through and in music can be improved. This article presents a discussion of the "meaningfulness in/for life" as it appears, and reappears in the writings of various philosophers, all of whom ask and answer this question from numerous perspectives, including human functioning and flourishing (e.g., Aristotle), moral "goodness" (e.g., Kant 1785), virtue and self-fulfillment (e.g., St. Augustine [AD 397--AD 398] 1981 and St. Thomas Aquinas [1225?] 1951), and pleasure and happiness (e.g., Jeremy Bentham 1789 and John Stuart Mill 1863).
