Abstract | This article presents the author's views on the concepts of the philosophers Deleuze and Guattari on striated (sedentary) space and smooth (mobile) space, asserting that "nomads" can move freely about their space. She relates these concepts to music education, incorporating Deleuze and Guattari's concept of mapping as it applies to local and global levels of musical experience. The article concludes by noting that music education is currently at home in striated space. Music educators could remedy their disorientation by developing a desire to create smooth, mobile spaces, abandoning a reliance on tracings, and foregrounding connections to their local and global communities. What would it mean, the author asks, if people became nomads with maps who formed musical connections in the glocalized world? (ERIC). |
