| Abstract | In this paper Vincent Cee provides a synthesis of ideas published by several authors who wrote in the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Remarkably, these authors arrived at similar conclusions in disparate ways and disciplines, all of which hold rich implications for music education. The works examined include Neil Postman's and Charles Weingartner's "Teaching as a Subversive Activity," Christopher Alexander's "A Pattern Language," "Music Society Education," by Christopher Small, Marilyn Ferguson's "The Aquarian Conspiracy," Morris Berman's "The Reenchantment of the World," and "The Turning Point" by Fritjof Capra. The author suggests that reading obliquely across disciplines yields themes that allow music educators to renew, recast, and redirect their narratives (Postman 1995). Put another way, Vincent Cee's contention is that the profession has overlooked and/or lost a generation of valuable insights published between 1969 and 1985. (ERIC). |
