AbstractHarvard is easily the most recognizable American institution of higher education, freighted with rich associations to the nation's leaders. This article provides an opportunity to examine the history of higher education through a lens often overlooked--fiction. By doing so, the authors provide a richer understanding of a particular institution and of the collegiate traditions generally. This article explores how popular magazine fiction and novels have portrayed Harvard in the early-twentieth century, with an eye toward how such representations reflected (and guided) perceptions not only of Harvard, but of the value and place of higher education in the U.S., informing national discourse during an era where college evolved to become less a custodial bastion for a social elite and more a rite of passage and career-building for a broad middle class.
