Abstract	This study focuses on elementary school teachers during the Great Depression and the role that they played to sustain everyday school activity. The authors draw evidence primarily from the pages of "Grade Teacher" magazine, through teachers' letters written to its editor, Florence Hale, and her responses to them. Opportunities to study the Great Depression were both implied and overt in the offerings of "Grade Teacher." Editor Florence Hale was quick to give advice to teachers who wrote to her about a variety of topics. Hale also implored teachers to become a more professional body by, among other things, joining the National Education Association and attending regional and national conferences, even during tough financial times. Numerous examples of the lessons written and taught by elementary school teachers in response to the Great Depression were also published in the magazine and are further highlighted in this paper. Findings from the study include multiple examples of teachers being advised to make sound economic decisions personally and in providing materials for classroom use; save for travel and professional development; teach about economics and banking; teach character education; teach about nutrition and provide it; and recycle, reuse and repurpose everyday items for classroom use.
