AbstractWhen refugees are forced to flee their country, they leave for a number of reasons. Some refugees resettle in the United States, in Buffalo, New York. Buffalo is home to a large number of Burmese refugees over the years and some of those refugees are children. Schools can play an important role in children's lives and school administrators can work together to create a school culture that is welcoming, inclusive of language differences, where diversity is celebrated, equity is promoted, and is culturally responsive to stakeholders (students, faculty and staff, families, and the community). Sometimes federal and state language policies obstruct school administrators from implementing programs and practices that would support all students. Policies can even impede school administrators orientations around language and multilingualism. School administrators can create a school culture that fosters a multilingual ecology where students' linguistic differences are accepted and celebrated. An exploratory, case study examined the communication practices used with multilingual families at West Buffalo Charter School. Findings revealed that some Middle School Teachers did not feel comfortable communicating with multilingual families and that they wanted more support and training around different practices to utilize when communicating.
