AbstractThe Latino population is a rapidly growing group in California, yet the rates of Latino student athletes competing at the NCAA Division I level is maintaining an alarmingly low percentage. The discrepancy in these numbers continues to have a substantial impact on the college completion rate of Latino students. The problem addressed in this study was the underrepresentation of Latino student-athletes competing at NCAA Division I institutions. The framework chosen for this study is called college-conocimiento which is the process of Latino students reflecting on the college information they receive about their intersectional experiences when preparing for college. Qualitative research methodology with a descriptive study design was the research methodology and design of choice for this study. Semi-structured interviews were the primary method of data collection. Snowball sampling was used to select 12 participants that fit the criteria for the study and thematic analysis was used to analyze the interview data. Through following the steps of thematic analysis, four themes emerged to address the research question which included personal influences in high school, family college experience, plans to pay for college, and family influence on college. Examining the personal experiences of Division I Latino student-athletes helped to get a better understanding of the type of successful support system that is put in place for those who make it to that level. The implications from this can help key stakeholders develop strategies that can be implemented for Latino student-athletes to provide them with the best opportunity to be successful. Future research recommendations include examining the roles that gender may play when making college choices within this community and the rates of Latino student-athletes attending National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and/or junior colleges.
