AbstractThe purpose of this mixed-methods study was to investigate the current mental health literacy of secondary school parents, coaches, and athletic trainers, as well as inquire about mental health resources. Additionally, the study aimed to determine if accessing a purposefully designed Mental Health Literacy webpage improved mental health literacy. An adapted Mental Health Literacy Scale was used for the pre- and post-test. After completing the pre-test, the individuals accessed the Mental Health Literacy webpage, which was the intervention; then the post-test was completed. There was also a voluntary interview. The findings from this study show the most frequently utilized resources for gaining information on mental health illnesses are talking to a health care provider, such as a primary care physician or a counselor. Also, using the Internet was a frequently utilized resource. There was a statistically significant difference in pre- and post-test scores between all participant groups, indicating the webpage led to improved mental health literacy. For the interviews, inductive coding was used to develop themes. The major themes discussed increased awareness about mental health illnesses, as well as enhanced knowledge and understanding of these conditions. Additionally, participants reflected upon the humanizing experiences that resulted from completing this study.
