Abstract | This quantitative, multiple time-series, correlational and quasi-experimental study examined the impact gratitude journaling had on the subjective happiness of high school students. In total, 85 student participants were stratified by grade and course before being assigned to a control group (n = 27) or treatment group the treatment group (n = 58). Subjective Happiness Survey scores were analyzed using Mixed Model Repeated Measures (MMRM) with factors for group, gender, and ethnicity, and a repeated measures factor (unstructured variance-covariance) for the week variable. The model also included two-way and 3-way interactions among group, ethnicity or gender, and week. The study found no overall statistically significant difference between groups by week (interaction p = 0.326); however, students in the journaling group had numerically higher scores after 3 weeks of journaling than in the control group. When evaluated by gender or race/ethnicity, no statistically significant difference between groups by week was found; yet, male students had numerically higher happiness scores than female students at each week, and White students had numerically higher happiness scores than non-White students.
