AbstractThere have been few research findings related to what specific characteristics or attributes might predict whether students who graduate from programs are likely to secure employment after graduation. The purpose of this non-experimental quantitative study was to identify the characteristics that differ between community college students who secure employment after graduation and those who do not. The theoretical foundations for this study were the social cognitive career theory (SCCT) and its resulting framework, the social cognitive model of career self-management (SCM-CSM). Previous research has indicated institutions often use the number of graduates from their programs as a success indicator, and generally attempt to increase that number through intervention methods. However, there is a gap in the literature regarding what student characteristics or attributes are predictive of graduation from programs. In this study, a quantitative causal-comparative design was employed to address the two research questions through a survey consisting of two parts, one measuring graduate characteristics and one measuring graduate attributes. Participants were selected using cluster sampling by program from the graduating class of a Pacific Northwest technical college. The Graduate Attribute Survey was completed by the participants with additional characteristics added from the literature. The data was analyzed using inferential statistics such as the Mann-Whitney U and chi-square tests as well as an independent sample t-test. The results of this study revealed that characteristics and attributes that were expected to be significant in determining whether graduates were likely to be employed did not affect the differences between employed and unemployed technical college students in the anticipated ways. These results may benefit institutions because they indicate technical college students may require a customized approach to career transitions while those students are still matriculating. Rather than building programs based on general undergraduate literature, technical colleges should work to build institution and population specific programs that will impact future student employment through interventions that will likely have a positive impact on their post-graduation employment rates.
