AbstractSTEM education has created successful educational outcomes and job opportunities in the United States. Despite the benefits to STEM education, Latinx students have a low STEM degree completion and are considered underrepresented. As a result, institutions are focusing on providing equal opportunities and increasing retention rates to minorities. Latinx STEM undergraduates are experiencing various challenges such as, achievement guilt, economic hardships, higher drop-out rates, and lack of sense of belonging in STEM programs. Identifying contributing factors that successful Latinx STEM graduates perceived as critical in their pursuit to STEM degrees is what this study sought to accomplish. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to examine the experiences and perceptions of Latinx STEM graduates in STEM disciplines as they earned a bachelor's degree. This study is grounded in the Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) model and uses an asset-based approach to focus on multiple forms of capitals utilized to empower Latinx students in their STEM degree attainment (Yosso, 2005). Interviews from 16 graduate participants were conducted from various 4-year institutions in the Northeast. Data was collected and thematic findings were reported to better answer the following research questions: What educational experiences do Latinx STEM graduates describe as contributing factors to their pursuit in a STEM degree? and; what motivational factors do Latinx STEM graduates describe as contributing to their persistence in obtaining a STEM degree? The findings of this study assisted in bridging the existing opportunity gap and ethnic disparity in STEM education while further aiding future aspiring Latinx STEM students.
