AbstractThis study explores the integration of career development into performing arts curriculum and its relevance to job satisfaction in the labor market for African American Music degree graduates. Through a phenomenological analysis utilizing interpretative analysis and snowball sampling, 11 interviews were conducted across two Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The perspectives and reflections of music alumni, music faculty, currently enrolled music students, and career services staff culminate to create a holistic understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the music programs at these universities. Through 247 quotations, 60 codes, and 14 networking, analyzed in Atlas.ti.9, this study identifies 21 career readiness competencies and two emergent skills deemed essential for navigating the music industry upon graduation. The study also reveals central themes related to lack of resources, networking, and connection opportunities for music students. It also discusses the working relationship between music faculty and career services and it explores career readiness and challenges African American musicians experience as they navigate the performing arts labor market.
