Abstract | This research study used a qualitative methodology to understand the experiences of Latinx students in a community college orientation program. The goal was to see the orientation through the eyes of the students and understand their perceptions of how the college's orientation might be improved in ways that help them feel welcome and validated in the sense articulated by Rendon (1994). In order to understand their experiences, 12 Latinx students attending a community college in the Midwest participated in focus groups. The participants were asked about their experience applying to college, interaction with their advisor, and overall orientation experience. Five themes emerged from the focus group interviews: family validation, welcoming orientation, academic advisor connection, high school encouragement, and understanding of the Latinx culture. The importance of family in the validation process is a crucial finding for improving new student orientation programs.
