AbstractThere has been a decline in interest in attending graduate school after the completion of a bachelor's degree. With increased student loan debt after graduating with an undergraduate degree, students are looking for a more practical and less costly way to maximize income without the significant expense of returning to school. Universities are now tasked with identifying ways to stimulate the interests of the working professional to return to school and pursue a graduate degree. As schools cast a wider net to attract prospective students, a new pool of less traditional students is applying to graduate school for acceptance. More applicants are falling short of the admissions requirement with an entrance grade point average (GPA) less than the standard acceptance requirement. This less traditional student seeks program entry through the alternative path of provisional acceptance. University administrative teams are challenged with determining the GPA applicants need for entrance into graduate programs to be successful and graduate. The purpose of this study was to determine if provisionally accepted graduate business students with a GPA that is less than the standard acceptance can still have student success. The research method was an ex post facto study which collected data on 129 midwestern graduate students to determine if a correlation existed between being successful as an accepted graduate business students with an entrance GPA lower than the current norm. Keywords: Degree Completion, Entrance GPA, Grade Point Average, Graduate Student Success, Provisional Acceptance.
