Abstract | College students must rely on many factors to be successful in their academic journey including belonging to the academic community and their supporting environment. During the COVID-19 pandemic many students felt a lack of belonging because of the preventions, restrictions, and barriers to network, socialize and create relationships. The concern is that this lack of belonging may have kept some college students from achieving their educational goals. This qualitative phenomenological study explores the perceptions of college students on their sense of belonging and its effect on their academic outcome as it was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The problem was to identify the gaps in literature to discover strategies that encourage a sense of belonging in college students as it relates to their academic environment (Li, 2018; Ratliff, 2016) and the barriers during COVID-19 to prevent them from effectively reaching their educational goals (McDaniel, Suffern, Joo and Alamuddin, 2020). The research focused on interviewing college students; the analysis revealed the success relied on the relationships of the individual students with their peers and instructors. The conceptual framework viewed the research from the different factors that influence the students' sense of belonging like the gap where students fail to connect or the lack of face-to-face interactions. Making sure a student has everything necessary for a sense of belonging is important before they can start to build their academic strengths (Maslow, 1954). The conclusory themes that emerged were (a) isolation (b) decrease in socialization and (c) reduction in instructional support, as well as themed suggestions of more group activities, (b) study partners and (c) more one on one with peers and instructors. Without a sense of belonging the student may not succeed to their goal to complete their college education.
