AbstractPurpose: The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine what relationships exist between the number of matriculation services reported (orientation, assessment, and advisement) and the number of certificates, degrees, and transfers awarded by California community colleges before the implementation of Senate Bill (SB) 1456, the Seymour-Campbell Student Success Act of 2012, in fall 2014. Methodology: This study utilized a quantitative Pearson Correlational model using archival data from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office (CCCCO) Data Mart. Beginning with the 2002-2003 academic year, this study explored 12 years of matriculation services reported (orientation, assessment, and advisement) and college completion data (certificates, degrees, and transfers). This study examined the relationship between total matriculation numbers and statewide community college completion numbers on an annual basis. This data included academic year, student credit headcount, matriculation services reported, and the number of certificates, degrees, and transfers awarded. Findings: Using the quantitative Pearson Correlational model, a strong correlational relationship exists between the number of statewide matriculation services provided annually and the impact of this effort on a six year completion (certificates, degrees, and transfers) model. It is important to note that the increase in awards of certificates, degrees, and transfers occurred as the annual credit student headcount decreased by approximately 11.67% during this same 12 year period. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study and the literature review it is concluded that increased matriculation services can lead to an increase in certificates, degrees, and transfers awarded, thus a correlational relationship between matriculation reported and certificates, degrees, and transfers awarded. Recommendations: Further research is recommended to determine other significant variables besides matriculation as predictors for increased completion.
