Abstract | This case study provides a description and in-depth understanding of changes in schooling after the implementation of college entrance reform in Shanghai, based on the observation of classroom activities in four high school classes, and interviews with students and teachers. It found that, first, whereas multiple criteria were taken into consideration when admitting students, teachers encouraged students to improve their competence in multiple areas. Second, whereas students can retake exams, they prepared for exams earlier and teachers changed the pace of their teaching. Third, whereas students could make multiple subject choices, a career development course was set up so students could choose subjects in which they were interested, and were beneficial for their future career.
