Abstract | This data point highlights reporting requirements in state policy regarding the use of suspension and/or expulsion. At least 39 states and the District of Columbia outline reporting requirements for the use of suspension and/or expulsion in statute or regulation. At least 11 states have reporting requirements that are specific to certain types of student conduct. For instance, at least nine have such reporting requirements for possession or use of unauthorized firearms; the reporting of which is necessary for receipt of federal funds under the federal Gun-Free Schools Act. This document is part of the "50-State Comparison: School Discipline Policies" that provides much-needed context for considerations of school discipline by outlining current state statute and regulations in an easily accessible format.
