AbstractThe principals' turnover significantly affects the public schools in the United States (U.S) every year. The significant growth of principals' turnover reaches over 20% of principals, who annually leave their jobs within less than five years. Although the principals' turnover affects both private and the public schools, public schools have experienced the high rate of the principals' turnover. The problem addressed in this study was that many public schools have faced increases in principals' turnover, especially high poverty public schools. Due to the increase in the principals' turnover, teachers' turnover also increases. The principals' turnover negatively affects students' achievements and graduation, and school performances. The turnover also increases costs of recruiting, hiring, and training new principals. The study purpose was to explore the main causes of the principals' turnover, its implications, and identify effective strategies that could be constructively used to address the problem. The qualitative case study method was selected for the study, and it was performed using grounded theory. The grounded theory methodology was used as the guiding conceptual framework of the study. The sample size of ten participants was drawn from a population of principals, teachers, and superintendents who maintained their jobs for more than five years in the same schools and school districts. Semi-structured phone, Skypes, and email interviews were used to explore the participant's perceptions and experiences. The participants answered the research questions through using the semi-structured interview protocols. The procedures of conducting the interviews were included in the study. The data were analyzed using coding transcripts and the final findings began to emerge from the interviews and the data. The study was concluded with the implications and recommendations for the future study to address the principals' turnover and its negative impacts on students, teachers, and schools. The first recommendation is that school district leaders need to address lack of support and respect, poor benefits, salaries, and compensations, job stresses and pressures, and professional development. The final recommendation for the further future research and the practice is to study the impact of leadership best practices on the relationship between the principals and school district leaders.
