AbstractThe United States has a long history of hosting international students at colleges and universities dating back as far as 1784. In 2017, this country hosted more than one million international students for the second consecutive year. Considering the millions of international students who have studied in the United States over the last half-century and the bright outlook for international students studying in this country in the future, the impact of international alumni of American colleges and universities is an area warranting further exploration. Although a great deal of research has been conducted to ascertain the demographics, experiences and behaviors that best predict domestic alumni engagement and giving, relatively few studies have been found that seek to answer these questions for international alumni. This study has been designed using a qualitative case study approach to explore the factors that affect the engagement of international alumni with their alma mater from a Midwestern, public, regional comprehensive, master's university. Qualitative case study was chosen in order to research engagement factors in depth and capture the complexity of participants responses. A questionnaire with open-ended questions was distributed via email (n = 3,326) and social media sites (n = unknown). Thirty-seven viable questionnaire responses were collected. Semi-structured interviews were conducted (n = 6) to further investigate the unique experiences and desires of international alumni. Initial coding and concept coding were utilized to allow the researcher to identify trends and patterns. Major findings were: (a) international alumni are maintaining connections to other alumni, faculty, and staff; (b) international alumni have a desire for more interaction from their alma mater; and (c) college experiences made a positive and lasting impression on international alumni. Based on the findings, the researcher identified three main areas of discussion. First, international alumni desire more engagement from their alma mater, both electronically and in person. Second, campus experiences matter. International alumni who were involved as students are more engaged as alumni. Furthermore, international alumni who had positive interactions with faculty and staff were more likely to be engaged as alumni. Finally, opportunities are being missed by not utilizing more resources to engage international alumni. They desire opportunities to advocate, mentor and in some cases, financially support their alma mater. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
