AbstractThis dissertation presents a phenomenological study that voices the perspectives of Korean female international graduate students in U.S. higher education on their acculturation experiences. This qualitative study used Berry's (2017) acculturation theory as the framework. This study particularly focuses on the acculturative stressors faced by Korean female international graduate students during their acculturation process. In addition, this research highlights the coping strategies developed by Korean female international graduate students, which helped them not only overcome their cultural stressors but also promote positive attitudinal and behavioral changes which consequently allowed them to experience integration mode of acculturation (Berry, 2017). In-depth face-to-face interviews with ten Korean female international graduate students from Midwestern areas in the U.S. were the sources of data that were analyzed to understand their challenges and acculturative environmental factors that influenced their life changes. This dissertation not only confirms existing research utilizing the experiences of Korea female international graduate students but also reflects the voices of all international students in the U.S. higher education. Managing a variety of acculturative stressors Korean female international graduate students faced during psychological, intercultural, and sociocultural adaptations was major challenges. Also, discrimination and injustice were important issues this population experienced as a minority. Encouraging awareness of cultural diversity and developing cultural competence were key solutions to support successful acculturation of this particular population. Korean female international graduate students are recommended to develop self-confidence by utilizing effective strategies. In addition, the professional educators and administrators in the U.S. higher education are suggested to understand the unique characteristics of their student body from various cultural backgrounds and advance their institutional services to support the success of their international students' acculturation.
