Abstract | This dissertation examined the influence of the higher education environment and an individual's identity and self-authorship on their decision to engage in charitable activity as a traditional first-year student in a higher education institution. The purpose of this study was to investigate the motivational factors of traditional students who made a financial contribution toward a charitable cause in their first year as an enrolled student in a higher education institution. The researcher used a qualitative single case study approach to collect data for this study, including a screening questionnaire and structured interview protocol. The guiding research questions for this study were: (1) what are the motivational factors behind traditional student's decisions to make a financial contribution toward a charitable cause in their first year as enrolled students in their higher education institution?; (2) how does the higher education environment influence a traditional students' motivation?; and (3) how does a traditional student's sense of identity and sense of self-authorship influence their motivation?Data analysis produced emerging themes. After being exposed to new people, new ideas and new information, first-year student participants acquired new characteristics or strengthened pre-existing characteristics and filtered their interests into different channels. Some individuals attached themselves to structured models of student organizations while other individuals navigated their first-year experience more freely and unattached. Regardless of which path they chose, these individuals felt the institutional environment played a role in encouraging them to engage in service-oriented activities with one of the specific outcomes being charitable giving.
