Abstract | In the educational research community, there is a general agreement about the importance of educators receiving professional development as one of the ways to improve student learning. Professional development for educators not only improve their knowledge and classroom practice, but maximizes students' potential for academic success. With the enforcing of stricter accountability requirements set by the US Department of Education, it has caused a greater need in the utilization of afterschool programs as a resource for providing academic support to school-aged children. In this study, action research was used to address the need for professional development for afterschool providers and to provide a better understanding of how the lack of professional development impacts afterschool providers and the students they teach.
