AbstractEven though Title IX was enacted 46 years ago, countless universities continue to struggle with compliance, and do not provide equitable opportunities for women. The purpose of this qualitative study was to conduct an anonymous online survey of athletic staffs at each of the 14 Southeastern Conference schools and study ten years of data (2008-2017) from the U.S. Department of Education's Equity in Athletics Data Analysis Cutting Tool to analyze the effects of the Title IX law on conference athletics and report any inequities found to exist. The literature review revealed the need to address ways in which schools can more effectively meet Title IX compliance mandates. Several key points were found as a result of the data analyzed. First, the research identified that sports opportunities for female athletes were not being provided in proportion to female student enrollment, and gender parity was an issue. The average athlete population was 612 with an average of 296 being female; however, the average student population was 23145 with 53% being female. Second, the 14 schools spent a total of $18,528,576 more on student aid for male athletes than female athletes. Across the Southeastern Conference, females are not only underrepresented in collegiate athletic administration roles they are also underrepresented in head coaching positions. Specifically, women account for 40% of head coaches of female sports teams, coaching 51 of the 129 women's teams within conference athletics. As one of the most powerful intercollegiate athletics conferences, the Southeastern Conference traditionally portrays the image of being controlled by white males. This image is counterintuitive to the foundations of Title IX. A total of 74 female athletic administrators out of 238 total positions; however, zero for 14 on female Athletic Directors for its member institutions. The findings of this research study seem to support that the Southeastern Conference has issues to correct if they are going to fully embrace the intentions behind Title IX.
