Abstract | This study addressed a gap in the literature on student financial aid and student outcomes by comparing relationships between for-profit and non-profit sectors to provide insight into the relative success of students in for-profit colleges. Specifically, this study used ordinary least squares regression to model the relationships between student degree completion and student aid profiles (i.e. loans and grant aid) in for-profit institutions compared to public and private not-for-profit institutions. Graduation, financial aid eligibility, and student loan indebtedness have been shown to be correlated with certain student academic and socioeconomic characteristics. This study therefore attempted to control for these factors to gauge the effects of for-profit institutions compared with traditional institutions. Key findings were that a relatively small number of predictor variables under study provide a robust explanation of the variance in credits accumulated among students in the for-profit sector. The findings and discussion from this study point to possible fruitful avenues of further study, particularly by investigating variations in these associations within the for-profit sector.
