AbstractThe problem for this research study developed from the current lighting environment in our homes, workplaces, and classrooms that are producing unwanted side effects in the form of too much blue light. As a result, educators, students, and their parents are all impacted by what some healthcare providers are calling "the looming public health crisis you never think about, but should." The purpose of this qualitative descriptive single case study is to research the perceptions of participants as it relates to their preferred lighting for learning. A series of semi-structured survey questions were conducted to gather the opinion of all participants on what they believe to be the ideal lighting conditions to foster learning and development. The theoretical framework that guided this study draws upon two major theories that stress the importance of the physical environment on student's learning and development. The first theory used to guide this research is known as the environmental theory. The second theory used is known as the ecological systems theory and was developed by Bronfenbrenner. In order to address the research questions and goals, a qualitative case study was implemented. A single case study design provided the researcher with greater insight into themes and patterns conveyed by both college students and faculty members. A series of semi-structured survey questions were conducted to gather the opinion of each participant on what they believe to be the ideal lighting conditions to foster learning and development. For this study, a sample size of 18 participants was selected from Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. The findings gathered provide evidence to support the idea that there is a knowledge deficit among the public opinion round overexposure to blue lighting and what lighting sources promote learning. As a result, the end goal should be to spark greater conversation and to bring more attention to this topic that has the potential to impact a very large segment of today's society.
