AbstractThe purpose of this study is to examine the sources of information utilized by rural high school students for future planning. Moll's (1988) concept of "funds of knowledge" provides the theoretical framework of this study. Moll believes all people have knowledge, and that knowledge can be used to enhance and incorporate future planning for rural high school students. Because there are so many definitions of rural, this study defines rural in accordance with the Farmers Home Administration, who considers "rural areas to be open country communities of up to 20,000 in nonmetropolitan areas, and towns of up to 10,000 with a rural character in metropolitan areas" (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 1980). Data were obtained using a paper and pencil survey of 237 rural high students from the Griffin, Hutchins, and Meece (2011) study, which has been replicated. A Pearson chi[superscript 2] was used to measure significance based on grade level, gender, and race. Results indicated that standardized residuals = 1.5 were evident with grade levels and gender, but not race. The primary findings of the study indicate that more research is necessary to connect ninth grade students and parents with the school counselor for college and career planning.
