Abstract | Sexual assault is a major issue on college campuses throughout the United States. Approximately 28% of women report being assaulted at some point during their college careers, while 2-4% of men report being victims. In order to address this ongoing problem, the government issued the Campus SaVe Act, which states that colleges are required to implement sexual assault prevention programming. While there have been many programs developed and implemented on campuses, few of them are based on empirical research and none of them have demonstrated results that show an actual decrease in sexual assault. This dissertation introduces a theoretically based sexual assault prevention protocol using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with first year college students. This protocol utilizes existing research as well as a new approach to address this concerning issue. It is suggested that the program be implemented during students' first year of college, as new college students are at the highest risk for being victims of sexual assault. The eight-session protocol suggests that students who can literally bring their values to college parties and sex may be at a lower risk for committing and being victims of sexual assault. The protocol moves through each of the six aspects of ACT's hexaflex in order to increase students' psychological flexibility and help them be present and conscious human beings during their time in college.
