AbstractThis book is centred on the perspectives, experiences and career trajectories of women of colour in British academia. It reveals a space dominated by whiteness and patriarchy, in which women of colour must develop strategies for survival and success. The contributors explore how their experiences are shaped by race and gender and how racism manifests in day-to-day experiences in the academy, from subtle microagressions to overt racialized and gendered abuse. The autoethnographies touch on common themes such as invisibility and hypervisibility, exclusion and belonging, highlighting intersectional experiences. This is a must-read for students, academics, schools, colleges, trade unions and organizations--and anyone with an interest in equality. Following the Introduction (Deborah Gabriel), this book contains ten chapters: (1) The accidental academic (Josephine Kwhali); (2) Overcoming objectification and dehumanization in academia (Deborah Gabriel); (3) 'One in a million': A journey of a post-colonial woman of colour in the White academy (Heidi Safia Mirza); (4) How do you feel? 'Well-being' as a deracinated strategic goal in UK universities (Shirley Anne Tate); (5) Inclusive ideals are not enough: Academia does not empower Black women (Ima Jackson); (6) Reflecting on a journey: Positionality, marginality and the outsider-within (Claudia Bernard); (7) The struggle to find a voice on Black women's health: From the personal to the political (Jenny Douglas); (8) The search for that elusive sense of belonging, respect and visibility in academia (Marcia Wilson); (9) The transformation of my science identity (Elizabeth Opara); and (10) Reclaiming freedom beyond the glass ceiling to transform institutional cultures (Aisha Richards). A conclusion by Deborah Gabriel and an index are also included. (ERIC).
