AbstractAcademic department chairs serve as front-line managers and leaders who perform a wide variety of tasks. These tasks may include mundane chores, such as ordering office supplies, or important ones, such as changing the department culture to one that embraces assessment. Too often, however, individuals take on the chair position with little to no preparation or professional development. It is therefore proposed that community colleges create their own, in-house, chair professional development programs. Such programs have some advantages over any of the external chair development "academies" in that 1) they are less expensive to create and maintain; 2) they can be administered on an ongoing basis, such that development does not need to be an occasional or "one time" event; and 3) they allow for customization at the institution and individual level. This dissertation utilized Critical Interpretive Synthesis to study the role of the chair and discern the knowledge, skills, and abilities that college chairs should possess and how they are best learned. It then presents a theoretical, three-tiered research-based model, which can be used to inform the creation of chair-specific professional development programming.
