AbstractThe Southern Regional Education Board's (SREB's) case study series highlights best practices High Schools That Work (HSTW) network schools and districts are implementing to better prepare students for further studies and careers. Lee's Summit West (LSW) High School near Kansas City, Missouri, boasts of a 99 percent graduation rate; 93 percent of its students are bound for college. LSW exemplifies what schools can achieve when they take seriously the HSTW design for continuous school improvement. Among other changes, LSW established rigorous benchmarks, upgraded programs of study and career concentrations, provided several AP programs and 35 dual credit courses, established an effective extra-help program for struggling students, and expanded and strengthened its advisory and guidance programs.
