AbstractThis study examined the effects of out-of-school suspension on high school students. Its purpose was to determine if exclusionary discipline practices led to negative consequences such as poor academic achievement and juvenile delinquency. The study also hoped to generate new insight into current disciplinary practices in order to yield a better understanding of student behaviors and the lasting impact that out-of-school suspension could have on a high school student's life. This qualitative study focused on student perceptions of out-of-school suspension and gave a voice to those who have been directly affected. The study included interviews conducted with eleven students who were in grades 10, 11, or 12 and who had been suspended out-of-school at least five days, cumulatively or consecutively, over the course of one academic school year. Questions for all participants focused on academic achievement, juvenile delinquency, student behavior, and individual perceptions of out-of-school suspension. Research suggests that the side effects of out-of-school suspension can be far-reaching in the life of a student. Topics such as zero tolerance policies, academic achievement and drop-out, suspended student demographics, school violence, mental health and well-being, the school to prison pipeline, exclusion as deterrence, as well as reducing the number of disciplinary referrals were also explored. The negative effects of out-of-school suspension bear closer examination and scrutiny in order to ensure that the educational opportunities of all students are protected. Studying the problem at hand from the perspective of the student proved to be invaluable. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
