AbstractUtilization of technology in the classroom has become the norm in higher education. Technology has been advocated as a means of improving learning and students expect it to be present so schools have adopted it in order to stay competitive. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of the technology is frequently either unknown or falls short due to a variety of factors including a focus on incorporating technology into classrooms rather than into curricula. This non-experimental, descriptive research study addressed this problem by investigating whether there was a difference in achievement between students in a course taught in a traditional classroom and students in the same course taught in a classroom where the presentation of the course content was managed through a learning management system. To make this comparison, the study evaluated test scores of 133 undergraduate nursing students divided between a traditional classroom and a smart classroom featuring an LMS. Age, gender, and ethnicity were all independently analyzed to determine their impact on outcomes in either classroom environment. Through these analyses, it was determined that while both age and ethnicity had a significant impact on final course grades, there was no interaction between any of the demographic variables and the classroom type. Based on the results from this study, the researcher concluded that a smart classroom featuring the specific LMS evaluated in this study is a feasible alternative to delivering course content in a traditional classroom.
