AbstractThis study advanced the research by Michael, Schwartz, and Balraj (2001) and McGoey (2005), which examined how trustees and other internal key stakeholders (respectively) from institutions of higher education in the state of Ohio perceived indicators of presidential effectiveness. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the perceived indicators of presidential effectiveness by key internal stakeholders (to include trustees) at institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In addition, the secondary intent of this study was to compare the findings reported by Michael et al. and McGoey in Ohio with the findings of this study conducted in Kentucky; thereby generalizing the results of the studies outside the borders of just one state. The primary research questions used to guide this study were as follows. What do key stakeholders at institutions of higher education in Kentucky perceive as indicators of presidential effectiveness and are there any differences in perceptions based on stakeholder position type, institution type, gender, years of experience, and educational attainment? What do key stakeholders at institutions of higher education in Kentucky perceive as key factors in the role of president and are there any differences in perceptions based on stakeholder position type, institution type, gender, years of experience, and educational attainment? How do key stakeholders at institutions of higher education in Kentucky recommend presidential effectiveness could be improved?
