AbstractPicture archiving and communication system (PACS) workflow directly affects the quality of emergency patient care through radiology exam turn-around times and the speed of delivery of diagnostic radiology results. This study was a mixed methods training and performance improvement study that evaluated the effectiveness and value of a hospital based PACS training program. The theory tested was that a structured training program, addressing very specific elements of performance as defined by human performance improvement (HPI) literature, would lead to improved user performance through increased PACS knowledge, skills, and understanding. This study evaluated and compared user performance levels before and after a structured PACS training program using surveys, interviews, and observations. The results of this study show that the training program had a positive affect the participants and department workflows, even though the monetary value could not be calculated at the time of the study. This dissertation may serve as a model or guide for future PACS training or evaluation of other electronic health care environments.
